Sorry, long time, no post. There is another excuse. I've been busy trying to plan my way from ever shopping in a large grocery store ever again. So far, this week I have gotten a months worth of meat off an organic farm just 15 miles north of us, a beautiful selection of veggies and raw cheese at the Ithaca's Farmers Market and 3 gallons of raw milk from our raw milk farm. I'm in the process now of figuring out how to make my own butter and ice cream. Both are pretty easy, I've just never made them before.
I'm using
Greenstar Natural Foods Market in Ithaca for other various items like spices and nuts which can be bought for cheap in bulk and are organic and not irradiated. I have made a trip to a local grocery store yesterday for a couple of items that I forgot, but my goal (especially going into the new year is to never shop at a grocery store again and to buy from local farms and stores). This is not just for health, but going into this new type of economy I feel that we really need to support our local stores and local economy now, more than ever. Obviously, if I do go into a grocery store I will still try and buy organic and local foods.
Even though we use raw milk, as an FYI for those reading- I have found that
Organic Valley milk is the best brand to buy organic milk from because they use local farms (to your area) for milk. If I ever need to buy milk in a pinch, I will use this brand.
Has anyone reading my blog seen the movie
Food Inc? IF you haven't, then you MUST!!! What a great movie. It's funny because I knew a lot of what the movie talked about and showed, but actually seeing footage of some of these farms and learning more about the non organic meat processing, literally made me gag (and almost cry!). GROSS! Please watch this movie, it will make you think twice before you step foot into a grocery store again!
